History

Organized high school football in Hawai‘i traces its roots back to O‘ahu in the late 19th century. In 1890, J.D. Wood, a teacher at Punahou School, organized the islands’ first football team, drawing players from both the student body and the school’s faculty.
To give Punahou competition, Wood later helped assemble another team made up largely of faculty members from Kamehameha Schools. In the early years, Punahou often faced a rotating slate of opponents, including various community teams that played limited schedules each season.
By 1903, regular matchups had been established among Punahou, Kamehameha, and Honolulu High School (now McKinley). This growing structure led to the formal creation of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu (ILH) in 1909.
Interleague postseason play expanded decades later with the introduction of the O‘ahu Prep Bowl in 1973, pitting ILH and OIA champions against one another. Hawai‘i’s modern state championship era officially began in 1999 under the Hawai‘i High School Athletic Association (HHSAA).
